WHERE IS IT DEVELOPED?
In Smara, in the Sahrawi Refugee Camps in Tindouf (Algeria).
Youth empowerment through education and training aimed at young boys and girls refugees in the Sahrawi Refugee Camps in Tindouf (Algeria).
Objective: To contribute to increase motivation and gender equality of youth in Saharawi refugee camp in Tindouf (Algeria) by providing tools and training resources, awareness workshops, offering leisure and culture proposals to adolescent refugee community. To expand the supply of training, education and awareness in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Tindouf (Algeria) by promoting the capabilities of autonomy, creativity, social participation, learning and leadership of young refugees both boys and girls.
The project focuses on the province of Smara, one of the largest and most populated camps with approximately 55,000 inhabitants. This camp -located in Tindouf, in the desert of Algeria- was created in 1977, so some Sahrawis are living in the desert as refugees for more than 30 years and the vast majority has been born there. The project beneficiaries will be the young -both boys and girls- of Smara, who lack the tools to succeed and to believe in the future.
This action seeks to enhance the educational, social and cultural motor, and to create a process of empowerment through young people in Smara. The project aims to improve the skills of young people by increasing their opportunities for training and leisure, as well as the increase of the interactions between them and other members of society and the construction of a youth association network, which will improve their self-esteem and motivation, as part of the decision-making and becoming actors of social change. The training and awareness activities are the central part to increase the motivations of young people in Smara. To fulfill the goal of empowerment, a body of activities focused on the direct and active participation of youth has been designed.
Activity(A)1. Agreement on the use of existing spaces (like AFAD's center or the UJSARIO's facilities) in Smara to do the courses or workshops
A2. To have periodic meetings with local teachers to decide the subjects of awareness workshops
A3. To establish a youth representative of Smara
A4. To organize courses and educational workshops in Smara
A5. To purchase educational materials and a projector
Through a process of empowerment, the project responds to the urgent need for young people to strengthen their ability to control their own lives. Under this approach, the young men and women have an active role and can participate in in the decision-taking process of their own community through the development of a critical attitude, stop being passive to become legitimate actors in their own development and welfare.
The empowerment process of the project will be associated with the strengthening, self-confidence and decent life, in addition to acquiring the ability to enforce their rights and to make their own decisions. This will be reached through participatory assessments and the constant involvement of young people in all stages of the project providing them the appropriate access to resources.
